THE IRRESISTIBLE ALLURE OF…
Fun fact: the two most popular postcards at YBD’s pop-up market shop this summer have been my two YOU CAN GET SO FUCKED cards — one featuring Madonna, the other Breakfast Club-era Judd Nelson. So popular, in fact, that I’m considering creating an entire YOU CAN GET SO FUCKED line of cards, which would include the as-yet-unpublished Janice Dickinson design (above), as well as a few more “role models” for this apparently very relatable sentiment.
Your Burning Desire, after all, was founded on the belief that honest self-expression is the necessary foundation for self-love. (Or is it the other way around?) Either way, I want to get people relating to these cards, hard. As an artist, I can’t draw or paint for shit. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways to package the human experience in an appealing one-two punch of humor and beauty.
This card was on my mind because I had just a hell of a day yesterday. The kind where you’re overworked, underfed, and feeling super victimized by the people, places, and things around you. Not only did I feel compelled to go to the gym directly after work and exercise like a maniac to release some of my YOU CAN GET SO FUCKED emotions, but I also called a family member and related my whole day of aggravation, dropping plenty of F-bombs into my story to make my point.
My point in this post is that traditional greeting card companies like Hallmark simply do not go far enough. They insist on celebrating only socially acceptable forms of emotional expression, such as happy birthday! or sorry your loved one died 😭 or hope you get well soon. I mean, that’s all real enough, but it’s only a small segment of what people want to communicate, but don’t know how to say themselves.
So to all those brave (and honest) enough to have already purchased the YOU CAN GET SO FUCKED postcards… I salute you. ❤️🔥 — Y.B.D.
