HIGHLY IMPERFECT PERSON OVER HERE

I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to assume the worst… about myself. It’s like I have some sort of awful filing system in my head that’s held onto every single criticism or complaint I’ve gotten from people over the past few decades (including myself). So when anything goes wrong in my life… or even just a feeling something is about to go wrong… I can slide my little rolling office chair over to the awful filing system, pull out some old musty characterization of myself as wrong or bad or defective, and slap it on my forehead like a blighted chicken on a Purdue assembly line.

When I started Your Burning Desire last year, though, I wanted very much to build a company — and a company ethos — where the focus was (at least in part) on actually celebrating the so-called “terrible” parts of ourselves. A place where perfection was just not on the menu whatsoever. A place where people could be cringey, or petty, or just plain broken. A place where a pretty model, a shiny red heart, and a witty remark was all that was needed to help dress up my feelings and turn them into something funny and beautiful.

As I write this, I haven’t made a postcard in weeks, maybe almost a month. This is absolutely unacceptable! True, I’ve been busy with work, with my kids, and with a million and one things to do around the house. But I think another part of it has to do with my lingering perfectionism — like, oh, I don’t really know, I probably don’t have anything funny or interesting to say on a postcard at the moment.

But that is complete bullshit. The market season is almost over, which means I’ll have an entirely new line of cards to design for the 2027 season.

Maybe I could do a postcard that says I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NOW. Or how about FUCK OFF, I’M THINKING.

What do you think?
