When I look at this card, I have to laugh, because it’s all so perfect — Donna Summer’s knowing expression, the colors on her top, the beach behind her, everything. She’s OUT THERE, and she knows it! I remember being blown away when all the components of this card came together, it was like a one-two punch of powerful color and sparkling attitude. Cards like this really do it for me because they have what I lack — guts. It takes a lot of courage (not to mention, pizzazz) to wear that kind of an outfit and say something so forward, even if it’s just for fun, even if you weren’t really trying to pick up somebody attractive. Sometimes humor is about being audacious and saying the kinds of things that other people wouldn’t even dream of saying. We giggle at the spectacle, and even might think someone like this is ridiculous, but deep down we might also be envious of someone who could let all their colors flap in the breeze like that, totally unapologetically. By the way, the “what’s happening, hot stuff?” is a line from the John Hughes/Molly Ringwald movie, Sixteen Candles. And I should really make a point of opening conversations with it more often. Because who wouldn’t be tickled to be on the receiving end of a line like that, especially from someone so ballsy and confident? — E.S.
