The text on this card is the chorus and song title of one of my most favorite songs, by the ‘80s band Curiosity Killed the Cat. (A band that is fantastically under-known and under-appreciated, I should add, even though the great artist Andy Warhol filmed a music video with them just before his death in 1987.) It’s the kind of song and sentiment I would have found repulsively sweet, back in my former life as a girl with zero self-esteem in her relationships. But now? Now, I would totally get off on a guy I was attracted to who could look me in the eyes and say, I’d like to treat you so well. Swoon! Because honestly, that’s the kind of emotional expression that actually matches the way I treat myself these days. I may be single (and who knows, I could stay that way forever), but I can still decide that I deserve to treat myself so well. And I don’t mean with flowers and candy and all that kind of material stuff. I mean treat myself with kindness, affection, appreciation, and respect for who I am as a person. Another reason I love this card is because the gorgeous Carol Alt’s makeup palette, as well as her dead-set expression, so perfectly vibes with the cool purples and blues in the background. She’s seductive, and so well-matched here with her environment. Then, of course, there’s the delightful ambiguity — is she the one who wants to treat the object of her affection so well, or does someone special want to treat her? You decide! ❤️🔥—Y.B.D.
