Have you ever made a damned fool out of yourself in love? I’m not even strictly speaking about romantic love, but in all other matters of the heart, too — from misguided career decisions to impulsive purchases you came to regret. I myself have embarked upon dozens upon dozens of creative endeavors that either fizzled or failed spectacularly. But they all had one wonderful asset in common: they came from my heart — wherever my heart happened to be, at that particular time. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that people shouldn’t apologize for violent or rude outbursts, in which their lower nature got the better of them in the midst of some overwhelming negative emotion. But remember that the heart is a different space and place entirely from that of pure feeling. What we call feeling, of course, amounts to random electrical surges coursing through our bodies and coming to rest in our thoughts, sometimes seriously distorting them. No, the heart is fundamentally good and true; the heart is the origin of all love; and the heart is responsible (or can be, anyway) for elevating us above the realm of fleeting feelings and petty circumstances. The heart is a lovely and benevolent place, which we would know if we stopped sidestepping it, making excuses for its authentic desires, or otherwise apologizing on its behalf all the damned time. Unleash your heart, I say, and let all that good wash over you… and any others who are lucky enough to be around you. ❤️‍🔥—Y.B.D.
