Isn’t this card just heavenly? I mean, those models might as well be cherubs or angels, all worn out from a day of spreading love and goodwill all over the planet or something. And yet, they’re finding rest and comfort in their shared fatigue, literally leaning on each other for support. The inspiration for this card (besides those awesome models, who came from an early ‘80s Vogue shoot), is actually my recovery fellowship, Alcoholics Anonymous. I’ve been going to meetings since 2017, and even though I’ve long since lost my obsession with drinking, I continue to attend my home groups twice a week for exactly the reason the card says — I’m just here for the love and affirmation. The meetings I go to are small, which gives me the chance to get to know people well, to trust them enough to be able to share whatever I need to get off my chest, and to open myself up to receiving their love and support. A.A. was really the first place I had ever experienced where the love and the honesty flowed freely and unconditionally, without all the tiresome labels and pretenses and affected coolness that keeps most of us aloof and self-contained in everyday life. It’s truly “spiritual kindergarten” for those of us trying to live more open and expansive lives. And if anyone who doesn’t understand A.A. asks me why I still go to all those damn meetings, that’s exactly what I would say: I’m just here for the love and affirmation. ❤️‍🔥—Y.B.D.
